It turned out to be a nice day! Mornings were like the days past. It started with thunder off in the distance. Radio traffic from the boats indicated concern with the scientific parties doing their diving ops. As the day progressed, the weather improved and by two in the afternoon, it was sunny and HOT! The seas were calm and you could not ask for a nicer day.
Unlike Maro, you can actually see land in the distance. I did take a photo from the weather deck to give you an indication of what I see from my viewpoint. The sand on the beach was white and you could distinguish vegetation on the atoll. We will be here until tomorrow and then set sail for Midway.
Today started off like a shore side Monday except no time for the blahs. It was a fast-paced day. The work was not tedious but required thinking. The issues were minor but time consuming. Then there are projects that are not of high priority but you get tired of seeing those continuously listed as work in progress. I finished fabricating network cables because I had six left and tired of seeing it in my task schedule for the past week.
I went to the gym after work and I had reserved the treadmill for 4PM. I get to gym only to see one of the officers already using it. It would not be fair to ask her to stop and get off when she was nine minutes into the run. Instead, I used the Bowflex as I watched her pace. I was not upset at the fact that she was using the time slot I signed up for but she was ever increasing her speed up to 7.5 and beyond! Even in my best days, it was difficult for me to sustain 7.0 mph on any treadmill. I did not say anything when she was done and waited for her to clear the gym so I could not be “showed up” as I did my walk at 3.5. I did get my 30 minute cardio exercise but not at the pace of the youngster before me. She apologized to me for taking my time slot when I saw her in the galley. I told her not to worry about it. Instead, I confessed I was more envious of her ability to run at higher speeds and did not want to be embarrassed by my slow pace. She is the same age as my daughter so E does have quite an advantage over me.
I am proud of myself to be working out on a daily basis and to limit my intake of the delicious food we have here. I have been eating fruits and salads daily. Occasionally I will slip and digest a brownie or cake. However, it is difficult to pass up. When I am on shore, I think of the baked items they have here. Cinnamon Rolls, coffee cake and cookies to name a few and then the salad bar and fish. When I am ashore, my diet consists of Asian and Polynesian dishes.
Not much doings and real tired today. Post this on the blog put in a movie in DVD player or read a book. I have one book I have not finished. I am going to change over to novels and get away from non-fiction for a while. I did enjoy reading the classics and I do have “The Good Earth” by Pearl S. Buck as a starter. I have not read the books or went to the cinemas this year as much as I have in the past.
I bid you goodnight from Lisianski Atoll.
