January 16, 2010 - Day Eleven on the Ka'imimoana

Day eleven on the Ka’imimoana and earlier this week we received some sad news from Seattle. “LO” passed away. I never sailed with him but did work with him at times on his ship during winter inports in Seattle. He knew everybody’s name. Even if your encounter with him was very brief, “LO” was as if you knew, worked and sailed with him for years. NOAA’s sailing community is small and most of the senior people know each other from other ships as juniors. As we come up the ranks, you get news like what we received earlier this week on occasions. When you do, it was people that were senior to us or retired. You knew very little or heard of them. You saw their retirement notice or went to the party, sat in the back and did not know enough to shake their hand and wish them the best when you left. Now when we receive news like “LO”s passing, it is people you know and are familiar with. Some funny things about them are still fresh in your memory or recall the last time you talked to or greeted them. Goodbye “LO” and it was nice knowing you. Too bad time did not allow us to sail a cruise together. Take care and you will be missed.

NFL playoff time and let’s go CHARGERS! At least one of my teams made the playoffs but will not take the Jets lightly. A few years back the same two teams were in the divisional playoffs in San Diego and the Jets won by a field goal. If any team could be Indy it is the Chargers. But first things first and it is to beat the Jets. With the retro uniforms it looks like an old American Football League match from the 60’s.

What a productive day! I resolved a nagging problem with fragmented files on the file server and deleted every one of those pesky things. This morning’s updates and PMs went by smoothly after last week’s catching up after the ship was laid up for a month during the holidays. I would like to get everything on the task list done before I turn the ship over to Mr. “W” in Apia. Yeah, right.

The last visit for this cruise at 8 South and 155 West occurred this evening. We turned southwest towards Samoa. Monday we turn the clocks to Samoan Standard Time. I talked to “L” tonight and the family is eagerly planning for my return. I asked that I get no special treatment and not to go out of the way for special food. I can eat taro, breadfruit and palusami all the time. I hear from her that crabs, lobsters and various seafood items are in order. The part about Samoa is the hospitality makes it difficult to leave.

Tomorrow is already here and beginning of transit day. I will work on items on the task list and the Samoa presentation as well. Then figure out the construction of the Intranet site they have on board. I put up the original site seven years ago and it has changed since. Mr. “L” made vast improvements and I want to study the mechanics of his site.

Good night from the Equatorial Pacific.
