January 19, 2010 - Day Fourteen on the Ka'imimoana

Another day passes and it is day fourteen. It is winding down and the pace is starting to slow. There were several mean rain squalls that hit us but it didn’t last long. The weather returned to its hot and humid distinctiveness. The ship held a safety standown as well as a man overboard drill. I am down to one issue but it is not something that can be solved without input from the manufacturer. That manufacturer…drum roll please is…Microsoft! What a surprise! You could probably tell that I am not a Windows fan and when it comes time for a new laptop or computer, I will go to Apple and whatever Windows machine I have converted to Linux.

I am exhausted and from what is a mystery. I had a minor nagging headache that kept bothering me most of the day. As soon as I get the blog posted I will head straight to bed. I got at least seven hours of sleep last night. I will forego exercise tonight as tomorrow will be clean up day for the shop and stateroom. I will work out in the KA gym for the last time tomorrow night. I do not know when I will be sailing this ship again. Nevertheless, I will be happy to see the Hi’ialakai and the crew again next month. It seems like this is déjà vu of two years ago when I did almost the exact thing.

As the days wind down for me here, it has been a pleasure to sail on the old girl again. It reminded me of the times of past and in some ways brought out what I had forgotten since my transfer from here three years ago. At times it felt like I went to a high school reunion or having dinner with an old girlfriend and afterwards partaking in a pleasant coffee, cake and conversation at a coffee house (a Seattle thing).

I created a link below to the blog for the Coral Reef assessment group that I will be sailing with on the Hi’ialakai. If you want science information and see what the core mission of that ship is, I recommend visiting that blog. Most of the scientist in that group I sailed with two years ago as well as other projects in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

I am going to hit the rack and get some sleep. I will take advantage of the time and get at least eight hours of sleep. I feel once I am in the village in Samoa, sleep will be a premium. I will be on “island time” so you will not see me in any hurry. I did bring my snorkeling gear so guess what I will be doing in my spare time? You guessed it.

Manuia-po from the South Pacific.
