The day started at Ofu and Olosega until mid-morning. We recovered one boat and then northwestern bound for Swains Island. Here is a photo I took two years ago. Unless there have been some radical changes it should look the same.
Swains Island, no mountain here (2008)
It was a beautiful day, sunny and hot. We were close enough to Ofu to where you can see the one car on the road heading towards the bridge to take them over to Olosega. Looking over at Olosega and the village you could see smoke rising from one of the fales. Either they were making Umu or burning rubbish. A tranquil setting where you really didn’t want to leave this island that seemed like a fantasy instead of paradise. I do not know if I would include it in one of the places I would like to vacation at, unless I wanted to relax in total isolation doing absolutely nothing. To me, it was a wonder that such a place can exist.

Fantasy Island to reality of work as this was one of those days where I should never got out of bed. It started off good but as I tackled two main projects, they both turned into, well not was expected. Tried different methods and neither responded. Storm over Swains (2008)
Tonight as I write this we are steaming towards Swains. I do not have the schedule so I have no idea when we will arrive. All I know is next week we will be in Pago Pago and I will be working. Most of the crew is taking time off and flying to Western Samoa. When they are not on the ship, it is the best time for me to work. I am going to be on OT next week, getting a lot of things done before the island hopping back to Hawaii.
Goodbye to Swains in 2008
I want to see if I can get some sleep. I bid you goodnight from the open seas in the South Pacific.
