April 11, 2010 - Palmyra Island and Murphy's Law......

It’s another day, back to work and end of reminiscing of things from the past. I am fighting fatigue as well as a cold. It’s been difficult to wake up in the mornings as the body tells me to stay in bed but what the body demands and what it receives do not necessarily agree. Its Sunday here at Palmyra and the weather has been plain lousy like the last couple of days with mixture of rain, sun and wind. It could not make up its mind what it wanted to be. It was windy last night and the ship took a few rolls. Stuff was flying off the desks onto the deck. I dreaded to see what the shop looked like and when I opened it this morning it was not as bad as I thought.

Murphy’s Law, that’s what today was, Murphy’s Law! Nice smooth sailing (again no pun intended) and then I get an automated message from my e-mail server. It tells me it decided to stop working and load up the queue with e-mails and said “I haven’t sent anything out in last two days. “ This happened about an hour before quitting time. Not to go into details, I know what it is not doing and as usual solutions from the past that resolved this issue did not work. Going through the e-mail server and mail transfer agent tells me everything is OK except the e-mail is stuck in queue. After sleep and a fresh mind, I will resolve it in the morning.

OK, now I am on overtime, as I was the entire day and the opportunity to install a new computer for plotting and navigating was perfect. We are going to be stationary with no CTD ops. Well you would think right? Except the security feature makes it a real pain in the arse and this being Sunday, customer service is closed. I’ve worked with this software years ago when the computer was doing the same thing of hanging up the application. It wasn’t easy then and it looks as if nothing has changed. Today turned out to be an eleven hour day. The e-mail server and the navigator software will be my two priority items for tomorrow.

Though I have been busy I did manage to read books while deployed. I’m finishing off another biography of Paul McCartney and start on an autobiography of the late George Carlin. The McCartney biography is up to date and different from others I read in the past. Though missing was interview with Paul himself so I get the impression he didn’t sit with the author or approve of it. As for George Carlin, he was always one of my favorite comedians along with Rodney Dangerfield and Johnny Carson. Carlin could come up with some real off the wall stuff that not only made you laugh but think. I should be on Carlin’s book by the end of the week and by the time I am done with the cruise, I have read four books, an average of a book a month.

I am going to hit the rack and refresh my mind and body. Well the body there isn’t much I can do about it but the mind, yes! I have a feeling tomorrow may not be as smooth as I am hoping it to be.

I bid you goodnight from Palmyra Island.
