Closer comes D-Day, not the famous invasion from World War II but departure day for Hawaii. Though I dislike the thought of leaving the wife again for two months, the increasing of funds in the pocketbook as well as the negative environment at the office makes the ship more pleasurable. The move to Newport is consuming the folks at the office. Another meeting in which most of the questions asked was hypothetical scenarios where answers could not be forthcoming. I realize everyone is trying to hold on to his or her piece of the American Dream and yes, if I was in the same situation, I would likely be more combative. I accepted the change of definition a long time ago and with my better half being an immigrant, we have a different vision of that same dream.
So come Wednesday, another flight from Seattle to Honolulu with travel miles increased. For many of the passengers will be tourists heading to the islands for vacation but for me it is a commuter bus I am taking to get to work. Many still say how lucky I am to be going to the Aloha State, but I need to remind them that it is for work and to put in a full days of work versus lying on the beach or walking the boardwalk is different. Even the restaurants I go to eat whenever food is not served on the ship cater to locals instead of tourists. However, the places I go to are usually of Asian of Polynesian tastes or hybrids where my friends can eat traditional American foods while I enjoy island or Asian style foods.
Meanwhile this weekend will consist of my last weekend here for two months. It is Labor Day weekend, the American symbol that the summer is over and back to school for the kids and remain at work for adults. I am grateful this Labor Day weekend that I am employed and it has allowed me to enjoy the fruits of my labor with vacations to Hawaii and San Francisco this year. This weekend will be spent on catching up, updating and stocking up for items that the wife and son will need for the next two months. Repackaging the CARE package of baby clothes and snacks for the kids in Samoa and send it off before I take off. It is starting off in a typical Seattle fashion, rain.
