Day two at Ofu and Olosega Islands, HI-2 small boat did not go out this morning and the engineer spent the entire day repairing it. Right around quitting time the boat went into the water and we will see if it will go out in the morning. The engineer does a good job but we will see if things beyond his control will intervene in the morning.
Today was spent installing a computer for the ship’s doc. I do not know how he tolerated it but the old Dell GX-270 he had was slow, despite upgrading the memory, scanning disks and the whole nine yards. Finally after many years he has a new machine. Of course it is a Windows XP with Service Pack 3 so give it a year or two before it starts to slow down after installing all the security updates and goodies Microsoft provides to make up for their quality deficiency. In addition, we are still using XP so we will see how long it will be until we have to upgrade again.

Olosega Island
We are rolling back and forth tonight as we sailed away from the islands to do CTD (collect data from different depths as well as collect water samples) and head back to the islands afterwards. There was not much excitement today from the ship’s ET department. I put in a full eight hours but Friday I need to reset the servers. Typical characteristics of Windows of having to reset once updates are installed and since these are servers, you cannot reset it at a whim. You have to do it when people are asleep or use is minimal.
Olosega Village in the foothills
Enough of shop talks! I went out to the weather decks during break to get some fresh air and sun as most of my day was indoors. We were close enough to see details of Olosega village and the bridge that connects to the two islands. Traffic jam consisted of at least five cars when I saw it. I did see one car parked in the village. I wonder what it would like to be to live on these islands. There is not any place for agriculture and I saw one small boat that looked as if it was out fishing. There is no influx of tourists and it is part of National Park of American Samoa.
Bridge connecting the two islands
Friday is upon us and not much writing tonight. I saw my favorite watering hole in Edmonds set up a Facebook page. I wrote on their wall and received a reply. I miss that place and I drink more Hawaiian beer there than I do in Hawaii. I always end the time there with a Bloody Mary. I need to visit them again when I get back. The theme of the place is Hawaii with Hawaiian décor. They asked me to bring something fun, what could that be?
Goodnight and Manuia-po from Ofu and Olosega Islands in American Samoa in the South Pacific.
